DC Bears Invasion: Come home to the Den

Filed under: Big Bear News — Lana @ 6:15 pm

The 11th annual DC Bear Invasion is this weekend, and the contest is being held at the Holiday Inn at 4th and New Jersey (very very close by). If you’re a DC Bear, come in any time this weekend for 10% off big bear coffee and pastries. You must be “bearish” to qualify.

We will also be selling t-shirts in bear sizes

You guys are too much! Fun idea! I’ll stop by and bring some bearish friends.

I was in there on Sunday, and a guy in front of me in line asked for an iced tea. The counter person proceeded to steep a HOT tea, and then when it steeped, he said he’d add ice. (I didn’t stick around to observe the process, however.) There’s got to be a more efficient way to serve people iced tea! It may have been a “speciality” iced tea (herbal?), but I’m not sure. I do know that from a time and cost management standpoint, this is not the best way to serve iced tea! I love you guys, but if a chain coffee shop opens in the neighborhood, you guys are doomed.

We have a few standard iced teas that are pre-brewed and pre-chilled. The iced tea that the gentleman in line in front of you ordered was one of our normal hot teas that he requested be brewed hot and then iced. i’d hope that our customers like us for the fact that we are more than a chain shop, quirks and all.

How do you define Bear? Is there a certain amout of body hair required? Do you have to have a beard? Husky? Gay? What if I am a young, smooth, skinny, Asian man who likes bears? Can I have 10% off too if I bring a bear in with me?

You guys are on to an untapped DC market here! In San Francisco, there is a starbucks in the castro that is THE unofficial official bear hang out spot. You should contact all of the bear clubs in the area and start promoting yourself that way! you already know about the dcbearclub.org. There is a bear happy hour at a bar called the ramrod every friday aftenoon. Maybe there can be a bear coffee hour or something? Fliers can be distributed at the ramrod or other bars in the area, as well ads in the blade or MW…think about it! :)

My partner and i (a bear and cub couple), visit big bear cafe when ever we can! we deifnately will stop in for our morning cup of joe and a growl this weekend :)

I used to walk by that starbucks every morning on my way to work! And I love the idea of a bear coffee hour. I’ll start working on a flier.

i certainly prefer the big bear cafe to any chain i’ve ever been to. the coffee is awesome, the staff is terrific, and the places has a cool vibe.
just about every time i come in i see people who live near other coffee shops, but come to bloomingdale just for the big bear goodness.

    To Lara,

Thank you for being so patient! I can say with *certainty* that although some folks you run into (or who comment on your site) are obviously fickle (or petty), the Big Bear is most certainly NOT doomed if a chain coffee shop opens in the neighborhood. Unlike some of the neighborhood’s more recent arrivals who may not appreciate how long it has taken for us to be blessed with businesses like yours, those of us who have been here awhile truly appreciate your hard work and will continue to support your business.

Keep up the wonderful work and the continued patience with those that are impatient, fussy, and/or less understanding.

    Hi Stu and Lana!

Congratulations on your cafe! I have been living under the full-time teacher and grad school at night rock for the last 1.5 years so forgive me that I just drove by and saw the cafe open today! We were on our way back from Jersey but I’m off for the next 2 weeks (thank god!) while I get ready for the new schoolyear. I will have to saunter down to check it out! I will be blogrolling you guys on my pathetic, neglected blog of course!

    Hope to see you soon!

Oh hooray, I totally dig the targeted market to the err bear market. I know of a certain former neighbour who is so hunkily ursine that he might even qualify for a double discount! Keep up the good works guys!
